But all engines make more than enough power to gently cruise an accelerate down the highway.
As 2 identically equipped SAAB turbos side-by-side (one with 89, and the other with 93) go down the road the engines make more than enough power to have them cruise at, oh say 65 mph.
The one with 89 octane will detect preignition sooner than the one with 93, causing in effect the boost to lessen--you DO AGREE that lifting your foot off the boost saves gas, right Greg? --the timing to retard, and the a/f mixture to change.
Since all gas 87/89/93 has about the same amount of BTU's, the octane and mileage are a function of the engine management system--T-7.
SAAB shops the world over are taught to explore a torque/sluggish power complaint FIRST by asking what gas is in the tank. The correct answer is for optimum power and torque, to use the 93 octane fuel.
But, economy is utilized with the lower octane as less boost = less gas = better mpg's (than with 93).
SAAB fuel engineers seem to know what they speak of ---my 9-3 SE is an absolute blast to drive with 93, but it gets better mileage with 89, and is easier to start in cold weather with the 89 over the 93.
SAAB teaches its dealership techs this thing for big $$$.
You learned it here for free.
