There is a big difference in torque in the HOT car. I ended up buying a '99 SE HOT. I test drove several base models both standard and auto and while the standard trans was ok the auto box cars were as others have said anemic.
It is a fun car to drive. You get very good response from the engine in every gear. It is a SAAB though, which means off the line you are beating no one unless you really get into the throttle....but once you hit second and into third the car really shines. The only time you really have to wait out the spool up is if you are in 5th at a lower RPM (that is if you are too lazy to downshift ;o).....however once the turbo does spool I have yet to really hit a very flat spot in acceleration. You are at 100mph before you blink.
I also test drove a Viggen....didn't buy though because I didn't like the blue color of the '99's and I couldn't afford anything newer right now. That car has some serious torque!
If you haven't bought yet, wait and find a HOT. You get all the SE features with it also....memory seats, auto climate control, 17" wheels, etc. for not much more than you would pay for the base model.
