by the Saab Factory rep. I had him drive my car ('99 9-3, 60k) to observe some behaviors, notably a rough vibration when the tranny is cold and the car is in gear. The whole dash area of the car vibrates sometimes. Less when its warm out or after the car has warmed. I was suspecting motor mounts. His explanation "I've been to the factory a few times, and sometimes we get to sit with the engineers for a few minutes. I mentioned this vibration to one of the engineers, that you can by a cheap Japanese car and it will run smoothly, yet this relatively expensive car vibrates like crazy sometimes" Engineer: "The Japanese put very soft bushings in their motor mounts, which absorb most vibration from the engine. We feel this is a safety shortcoming. Saab engines and transmissions are a component of the crash absorbing characteristic of the car, therefore we use stiffer mounts to help protect the passengers" Whaddaya think? (other 'tests' on the mounts didn't really show much).
