Reverse lock lever, hard finding 5th gear.

It recently came to my attention that a Saab that I purchased a few months ago is broken (1999 9-3 base). It's my first Saab so I didn't notice anything other then that shifting into 5th was difficult unless you had it lined up perfectly.
So I did a little searching and found that you are supposed to have to pull that little lever up under the shift knob to get the car to go into reverse.
Well I don’t have to do that. And when I pulled up the boot to have a little look, there is nothing connected to that lever part of the shifter. AND I can’t for the life of me see where any arm or rod might connect.
Can anyone provide a picture, diagram or schematic that might help me figure out what I’m missing? Maybe any problems other have had in the past with that assembly?
The strange thing is that I would assume that if the connecting parts were to be broken or have been pulled out, that reverse would always be locked out and it’s not. Could it be possible that someone broke the lock just because they didn’t like it?
TIA
