What I think is funny about this whole thing is that it really comes down to terminology more than anything else. Getting rid of the hatch means that they can put "Sedan" instead of "5-door" on the sticker, and all the car rags have to call it a Sedan in their reviews. Who cares what it looks like, just as long as it's not *called* a hatchback.

The new 9-3 still has a pretty noticable "fastback" look to it, if we want to delve into the terminology of the past. At the very least, it ain't no K-Car, if you catch my drift (look up the Dodge Dynasty if somehow you don't remember).

What I wonder is why couldn't the new 9-3 have been a "hatchback," but look the same. Honestly, from glancing at the pictures, somebody could convince me that it is. I mean, just look at the 9000 5-door. (I know its a weird car, but bear with me.) What is it? A sedan or a hatch? It sure doesn't *look* like a big NG900/9-3, if that's what a hatch means. Doesn't look like a big C900 either, not by a long shot.

Well, I'm a 9k Aero driver, and I think my car's a sedan. A sedan with a rear window that just happens to hinge out of the way so I can get stuff into the trunk more easily. A sedan that happens to have nearly as much interior volume as a BMW 5-series wagon. Even if you have to call it a hatchback, pretty much anyone would agree it's the most conservative-looking hatch they've seen.

With the 9000 in mind, why couldn't Saab retain the identity it's had for decades but appeal to a broader audience? Don't fool yourself thinking that it's an engineering issue or that it'd reduce body rigidity too much. They could've done it, but they didn't want to. It's all in the terminology. But, to be fair, the 9000 wasn't an overwhelming success either. Saab (GM) might have been afraid to try something similar, with good reason. I mean, look at how much "better" the 9-5 is.
