When they fixed it the first time did they just take the dash apart, re-lube everything and put a new knob on? That is what the dealer is told to do first because if that works, it is the simpler and cheaper fix. If the problem is due to the air flow drum binding, eventually the problem will happen again and the ultimate fix is to replace the whole "heater box" that contains the air flow drum. For most of us who have had this problem, there were a number of 9-3 models in 1999 and 2000 that got the bad heater box.
This is a well-known problem for any Saab dealer and service center so if they just did the re-lube job the first time, I would talk to them and be polite but firm and see if they will agree that they tried the first stage of the fix and need to go ahead and do the second stage (i.e., replace the heater box).
In my case it happend at 16,000 and again at 20,000 so my 9-3 was still under warranty.
