The KIC and VRK rack kits are similar or identical. They mount the rack in metal, there are no bushings used, that is the whole point. The bushing at the drivers side is still there, and that end can defect fore-aft-up-down etc, but side to side deflection is elininated. The other bits that you see are the tie rods. The tie rods have steel on steel joints at each end. These do not have rubber and there is no deflection unless they wear out. The outer tie rods ends sometimes fail, but that is probably from water getting into them.
I am thinking that replacing the bushings at both ends and doing without the brace to the fender would be as good or better. Replacing the clamp at the driver's end is considerably more difficult. Replacement of the rubber bushings with hard plastic or even something like maple (wood) might be very effective too.
