I recently changed the plugs on my 2001 9-3 base model after 30,000 miles and found virtually no plug wear at all. The gap measured .037" which was the same as the new ones were when I took them out of the box. I suspect that this is due to the fact that the plugs were NGK PFR6H-10 (so called "Laser Platinum") which are way more expensive than the plugs that Saab used to specify for the earlier model 9-3's. Apparently they have gone to the more costly plugs to control the gap erosion you saw. I couldn't detect any performance difference after the change, and suspect the more expensive plugs can probably be run for a lot longer than 30,000 miles.
