I started my new car yearning thinking that a high-end Jetta would make me very content. But a high-end Jetta starts to get very much in the price neighborhood of a baseline Saab. A friend encouraged me to check it out and the more I checked, the more a Jetta or anything else seemed silly for roughly equivalent money. I must say that I ordered about the cheapest 9-3 SS possible (just the heated seats and obligatory headlamp washers as options) so I can't really say that I realistically even considered Audi or BMW comparisons. When I picked up the car, it had a few more features on than I ordered (16" wheels and bixenons, lucky me) so I literally go more than I paid for. Even so, I can't imagine having gone with Jetta or even a Passat in retrospect. I feel like I'm way out of my league driving the 9-3 around and yet I spent a lot less than many people believe. Good luck in the search.
