Hi,
I have a Saab 93 Areo (Areo is the name of the high performance model in Sweden and Europe with the sports package). This model is equipped with 17" wheels. Now, I live in Sweden and where I am we have 3 - 4 months of winter roads with snow. In Sweden we have to have special snow tires during winter. So, we have two sets of wheels, ordinary for summer and snow tires for winter. Most people also have studs (nails) in the winter tires for better grip on ice. My winter wheels are 15". I wouldn't think of driving on my 17" wheels in snowy conditions.
However, it is not the height of the wheels (17") that is the problem, it is the width of the tires. Normally, larger wheels also have wither tires. My 15" winter tires are much more narrow then the 17" tires and narrow tires gives a better grip on snow than tires with a greater width.
Also, winter tires have a different mixture of the rubber to perform better in temperatures below freezing point. The rubber in winter tires is softer than the rubber in the ordinary summer tires.
So, M + S tires are a compromise of both worlds and wont give the best grip on either snowy winter roads or dry summer roads.
