But say you wanna' lease a Saab instead of a BMW and the BMW salesman told you how great their resale was (the great falacy of German arithmetic as I call it, pay $10k more for a 3 Series and it'll be work $5k more later). Well even with a much lower residual or buyout the Saab payment is probably still alot lower, for more car I might add, so leasing takes the worry out of depreciation. You can buy the car or not at the end of the lease. A car with a higher residual will just cost you that much more. A low payment and a low residual is a Win-Win.
Leasing insulates you against resale performance. If it's worth less than the residual give it back, if it's worth more trade it in.
