My bad wheel bearing (on an '89 900) sounded & felt like I had a coarse, knobby tire like a mud/offroad tire. It didn't change when I turned. Usually, wheel bearing troubles will change when you load or unload that corner. That's like yours is doing. I'm sure other people will chime in.
Yours sounds like either a wheel bearing or ball joint, so you could have your mechanic check both. You could jack up that corner, grab the wheel top & bottom, & try to wobble it. Then grab it side-to-side & try to wobble it like steering. That's not a foolproof check, but either way, it shouldn't have any looseness. If it's loose, you want to see where the looseness is located. Don't get underneath the car if it's only supported by a jack...
