My 9-3 turned 50 (thousand miles) this weekend (warranty ended long ago), and it's running great...almost. I've got a couple questions.
First, occasionally, when I hit a bump in the road with the right front wheel, I hear a loud popping noise. It doesn't always happen at large bumps, and sometimes it will even happen at small bumps. I haven't figured out what conditions trigger the noise.
Second, on Friday, driving in 90-degree weather on the highway, I felt a vibration in my seat that seemed to be coming also from the right front wheel, although I couldn't be sure. It felt like I was driving on a washboard road, but the vibration was independent of road surface. As I drove, I realized that the vibration only occurred when there was a lateral force on the tires: either the car was on a surface that sloped down to the left, or I was making a right turn. In other words, when the car was pulling away from the right-side wheels, I felt the vibration. After about 2 hours, the noise stopped. At that point, the temperature outside was much lower, and the noise has not recurred (no more 90-degree weather since then).
I've seen the TSB on suspension popping on acceleration, and I plan to check the torque on the bolts mentioned there. However, my problem is not on acceleration, so I'm not sure that's the issue.
On the second problem, I'm currently suspicious of a wheel bearing problem, although I don't know enough about cars to know what bad wheel bearing symptoms really feel like. I mention it in the same post as the first problem because I *think* that both problems are in the right front wheel.
I'll talk to a mechanic soon, but I thought I'd get some ideas here first. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Matt
