...and it was a happy ending at that! A little background:

I bought my Saab (a 1999 9-3 with 43,000 miles) on May 8th of this year. The car was apparently in tip-top shape and had had a considerable amount of work done on it at its end-of-warrenty tune up, including a shiny new transmission and some other odds and ends. About a week after I made the purchase the display in the dash indicated that I needed to add coolant, which I did immediately. Unfortunately it went through coolant quite quickly, and I was having to add about 1cm or so to the reservoir each week which seemed to be an alarmingly large amount. Through some information I learned on this site and others I realized that my head gasket was probably leaking.

I took it in to my mechanic 2 weeks ago and he said that the situation looked grim. There was a noticable buildup of dried coolant and oil coming out of the corner of the engine closest to the battery, and that there was some coolant present in the oil. Not good.

Well, I got my car back today after bringing it in yesterday to get a new gasket installed. I authorized the mechanic for $1200 worth of work (including resurfacing the top of the block if needed), which I really can't afford at the moment considering I'm unemployed. It was much to my relief when they called today and told me that all that was needed was a re-torquing of the head bolts. Total cost to me: $190.

They told me to post here actually and let others know that even if there's a significant amount of coolant disappearing a re-torque may still be all that's necessary. If you're leaking coolant definately have it checked immediately, but be sure to know that it may not take a $1200 repair to solve the problem!
