I agree 100% that re-torquing is the proper 1st step, but that is no guarantee that the problem will be fixed.
If part of the gasket is oil soaked, and part is dry, the the dry part will not compress as much as the wet part, and leaks can continue.
Also, if compression blow-by or corrosion damage the sealing surfaces re-torquing will not work.
But, I wish you luck, and I believe that your mechanic has done the honorable and proper first step (could have soaked you for $1200.00).

P.S. I had my head gasket re-torqued at 42K miles. Now at 59K and everything seems to be holding tight.
