I learned a tip at the Viggen driving school that I will use the rest of my life. You should rarely have to turn around to see behind or beside you in any car. Period. This includes changing lanes. Do this:
If you can see the side of your car in the side view mirrors then they are too far in. You don't need to see the side of your car - you're not going to hit it. :^) Move the mirrors outwards until the side of your car just goes out of view. On mine the drivers side mirror is almost as far out as it will go. That should be about right but will require some fine tuning while driving. Get on a main road an let someone pass you on each side of your car. I'll use the left side as an example. As the car passes you it it should dissappear from the rear view mirror. As the rear of the passing car leaves the rear view mirror, the front of it should appear in the side view. If it does not, adjust your side view in or out as appropriate. Repeat for the right side. This position will leave your side mirrors much further out than most people are used to and it might take a week or so to get used to it. But trust me - give it a week and you will never have to turn around to see behind or beside your car again.
