I also believe the rust is due to differences in pad material. You're right, all rotors (except enzo&porsche) are cast iron. So if one rotor gets rusty and the other doesn't, it must be due to pad material. I'll guess that non-metallic pads leave some sort of protective film on the rotor surface while metallic pads leave a film of...metal.
