That's not a bad idea, but the ends are different. The 900's have a half moon end. These new 9-3 shafts are shaped like a T. Still, the universal joints from the 900's would compensate for the misalignment. I think I have one around - I'll let you know how it works out. If your original shaft tears, it's because the friction on the rotating drum inside the vent housing has increased. I pulled the glovebox down (three screws - not bad), the side panel (two screws), and then the duct just snaps out exposing the drum. It was covered in white grease which had hardened. I scrapped it out while working the control with a screwdriver replacing the plastic shaft (by the way, the Saab Parts Department guy referred to the shaft as a toilet paper holder - very similar!). That freed it up quite a bit, but it still feels like a lot of load for a hollow plastic shaft. There has to be a better design!
