Keep in mind - the Saab amp will only produce mid-bass signal, so feeding
it full range will result in the loss of all frequencies above a certain level - just in case you were thinking of changing out the door speakers. I tried to ask Saab what the frequency response of the amp was and they were no help. I do believe it's in the electrical factory service book. Irregardless, you will also not have gain adjustment on the Saab amp so you will never be able to balance the sound with your powered head unit/aftermarket amp.
You will also have to address power turn-on for the Saab amp that is normally fed through the DIN cable. Not an insurmountable problem, just more time and money.
And, you are correct, the amp drives only the door speakers.
Conventional wisdom on this board suggests adding an aftermarket amp and component speakers - woofers in the doors and tweeters in the dash. If you listen to the comments of owners who have done this, it makes a world of difference to replace the Saab speakers and amp.
Best to You, Doug P '99 9-3S Stock Head unit, Rockford 4-channel amp driving component speakers in doors and 6x9 three-ways in the rear.
