There is no doubt in my mind that Octane counts. My 2001 93 performs better and gets better mileage with high octane. I am not sure moving from 87 to 89 does much for the car, but running 91 - 93 octane is notable.
DO find a station that sells a lot of the fuel. Refiners only 'guarantee' the octane for 90 days from the date of manufacture. There can be up to 30 days in transit. So, figure after 60 days of storage 91 octane is not 91 any longer.
Locally, the 'powers that be' promote corn-syrup gas (gasohol). Politicos got to pay back ADM for all those contributions. This fuel may reduce pinging, but does not produce better mileage. It actually is worse. Long haul trucking firms have proven it in studies. So make sure you get 'real' higher octane fuel not with the alcohol boost.
