I'd been putting 87 octane in my '99 9-3 for a couple of years as per the dealer, and the car seemed to run well enough. On a business trip to Norway I was given an '00 9-3 to drive, and found that only the 115 octane pump at the gas station fit into the filler. I thought this car was perkier for some reason...
Upon coming home I started putting 93 octane in my car and noticed a slightly smoother idle, and improved responsiveness. Now if I put anything lower in it, the car runs very poorly.
As much as I'd like to think Saab thoroughly adjusts these cars for the different markets they're sold in, I suspect that the US versions are as thirsty for 115 as their Euro-market counterparts.
