The T7 will not care about the open filter, but the MAF needs to be connected and isolated from vibration as well. The filter must be free of vibration which can shake sand through the element. As long as hot air does not get into the filter it will work great.
In the picture the MAF and filter are fixed to the chassis and that seems ideal.
But note that the air dam does not capture the fitler behind the head lamp. There seems to be evidence that he created his own air box and there is a duct, lower leading forward for cold air, but mostly out of the frame of the photo. That duct, out of frame, may also be getting air from the opening into the fender well.
