I have several such small chips on my '01 9-3SE. I have had similar concerns, and consequently went to a windshield glass shop to get it checked out. They said that since the damage had not protruded through the full thickness of the glass (as a crack would, for example), that it was not advisable to attempt a repair. Reason being, to do the repair, they have to drill through the full thickness of the glass.
I do not imagine that this sort of pitting damage would progress from thermal cycling as a crack would. It probably does amplify the chances of crack initiation in that area, but until it does crack, I don't think there's much you can do about it.
I imagine in time, depending how fast you drive, there will be some erosion from the air making the pit grow larger. In ~6mo, I have not noticed significant growth of the small pits in my windshield (knock on wood). I have numerous pits like this on my '89 900S as well. None of them have ever cracked or grown noticably in size (knock on wood).
So, in summary, I've learned to live with it. I'd love to hear if there's a better solution though. I have one right in the middle of my field of vision that's particularly dissatisfying when the light hits the windshield just right (wrong?).
If only Stongard worked on windows :-)
Cheers,
'Roo
