Yes, either by a Manual Boost Control or by an ECU chip/flash upgrade. As long as you're running stock boost you're good with the stock Bosch valve.
It's the increase in boost pressure that will eventually kill your diaghragm-style Diverter Valve/Boost Pressure Valve/Blow Off Valve. (The cars come with a DV/BPV, while BOVs are always an after-market item.) The diaphragm eventually gets torn & leaks both vacuum & boost, making it slower to react & not effective at holding boost.
Testing is easy if the damage is severe. Just pull off the small (3mm?)vacuum line going to the top of the valve & suck on it. You should be able to activate the diaphragm & have it not return to "resting" position. If it's a really small leak, you may end up wondering if it's the valve or your ability to become a good source for vacuum. :-) More precise testing can be easily done with a $40 (from Sears) hand-held vacuum pump/brake bleeder.
Also, simply turning the valve around so that boost pressure comes in thru the bottom port (rather than the side port) may offer enough airflow change to keep a stock Bosch valve running longer with increased boost. Since this also increases the valve's "clamping forces," I wouldn't turn it on a stock setup.
If you're really masochistic, below is a Performance BB link to some test data I logged on several DVs.
