I've only owned my 2000 less than a yr, bought it with >30k miles so don't know what was fixed prior to that. I've put 10-15k on it & experienced no issues to date. Search this bb for the word "Viggen" to see what others have had problems with. Seems two typical watch-outs are the rims and brakes. Viggen 5-spoke rims are very light, but very soft & bend easily. Mine goes down the road smoothly so I've not bothered to check my rims. Brakes go quickly; not just pads, but rotors. And Saab didn't make them thick enough to allow re-facing. I recommend my approach: If the car stirs your loins, seems to have been cared for, drives well, and is fairly priced, buy it. It's got pleny of warranty left for you to evaulate whether or not it's a "lemon" without having to worry about out of pocket expenses. If it proves to be unreliable, sell it with some warranty left.
As for tires, stock size is 215/45-17. Many change to 225/45-17 to soften ride a bit and provide rim protection. Personally, I don't mind the ride as is and I prefer the visibly shorter sidewall of the 215. Also, Viggens tend to "tram" a lot under hard acceleration and in general wider tires can increase that tendancy. Hey... good luck w/the purchase decision. Viggens are not for everyone. The chassis is a bit old school, the ride is seriously "sporty", the interior is narrow vs the 9-5. But they are excremely entertaining to drive, the seats are among the best, they look great, there are only 2,900 in the US, and they still offer plenty of room and function. I'm very glad I bought mine.
