...that SOME people who work as automotive journalists think that older Saabs were not good cars, or were too strange to be any good (even though that those who own and drive them will disagree).
Unfortunately, those close-minded individuals refuse to accept that Saabs have become better cars in recent years and for some reason feel the need to put them down for improving the very things that they didn't like about them in the first place. It's sporting an attitude is "I don't like this car, and no matter what you do to it, I'm still not going to like it."
I think that that car (or any car) should be based on how it is now, regardless of people's opinions of them in the past.
I have also seen that some people think that since this car's plaform will be shared with other GM products (Malibu, Grand Am, Saturn, etc. -- although some are based on future models) that this car is automatically going to be the same as those cars. They somehow think that the 9-3 is nothing more than a rebadged Saturn when we all know that isn't true. So say you have someone who doesn't like Saturns. They see that the two cars share the same plaform and assume that the Saab and the Saturn are basically the same car and draw their own conclusions from that.
I have an issue from the UK mag Car from a year ago that had a very favorable review of the new 9-3 (4 our of 5 stars), and it was one of the first reviews that was published. Yet, in the very same issue, another writer wrote an article saying the previous generation 900/9-3s were lousy cars and even went to say that the cars were "dangerous and were likely to get you into an accident". He aluded to the new 9-3 SS and said he thought that car would probably be pretty lousy too since the old ones were (in his opinion).
I hope to soon be an owner of one of these fine cars. I currently drive a Ford, and I have been happy with it's quality, but not the quality of their service. I am not going to get into that here, but I have been shopping for quite a while and the 9-3 is the car I will probably end up getting. When I told people I was thinking of getting it, they said, "Saab? Why would you want one of those?" Obviously, they aren't familiar with the cars (except for maybe the ones several decades ago).
I am not trying to insult anybody, I am just trying to make a point. And that point is, a lot of people's opinion of Saab products is based on something other than the facts. And in the case of car reviews, it should be based on the facts. The worst review I ever read was by Daniel Heraud's review of the 9-5 at autos.msn.com. If you read it, it is obvious he didn't take the time to really review the car, or learn anything about it, referring to "sleep mode" and "fake wood trim" (the car uses real wood trim actually).
