The two cars are very different. After driving a 9-5 aero wagon for 3 years and switching to a 9-3 Vector, I was struck by how the 9-5 felt much more solid and luxurious. No cheap plastic trim (or clutch pedal for that matter), and everything feels more solid. It is a car designed to sell for $40K and compete with a BMW 5 series, and it shows. The back seats also fold flat, so there is more room, and the Aero really pulls on the freeway. The stereo is far superior, particularly the Harmon Kardon system I had.
On the other hand, the 9-3 is a car designed to appeal to a younger buyer and sell for $25-30K at a profit. It is quicker, more nimble and the new motor is much smoother than the 2.3L. The gearbox is a lot quicker and the steering much more precise. But it is not as rock solid on the highway and some of the details haven't been worked out yet. I got it because I wanted a stick and the sports car experience. I couldn't find a 9-5 aero wagon with a stick in the LA area in July. I enjoy buzzing around town in the 9-3, and it looks very attractive, but I do miss the refinement of the 9-5 (that quiet sunroof at highway speeds, for instance) and the extra space in that wagon.
Either car is a great value. Genuinesaab.com will sell you the Aero sway bars to tighten up the handling if you pick the 9-5 linnear, and I would recommend that mod.
