Pinging and knocking (long-ish)

I have a '99, 41,000 miles, auto. For a while now I've had this slight pinging and knocking (sometimes worse than others) on acceleration and under a load. I recently replaced the plugs (NGK 6ES's gapped to .035) and have also run two bottles of Techron through the system to no avail. I'm using Chevron mid-grade (89 octane) and it's never thrown a CEL (knock on wood).
Was in for a scheduled oil change today and brought up the issue to the dealer for third or forth time. On previous attempts to replicate sound the mechanic was unable to hear the noise. This time he finally heard it and said sure enough that it was a slight knock. But....he said that there is nothing they can do - just the way the T-5 is programmed. He even suggested that I try a lower grade of fuel - 87 octane. This seems completely counter to what I have read here.
I find it extremely hard to believe that this is right. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this and is the mechanic full of it?
Thanks in advance for all of the help! This board is invaluable and has been an unbelievalbe resource.
Thanks again,
Ty
