Why the tire size difference between 03 and 04?

The 2004 9-3SS aero (vector) has 215/50/17 tires, while the '03 vector had
225/45/17 tires, according to SaabUSA website. Why the change? Did Saab think that the '03 models were to harsh for us Americans? I wonder if less rubber on the pavement will make it more like the softer steering feel of the Arc or affect the handling much...
