It admits that heavier cars fare worse in frontal offset tests but better in real-world two-car crashes. Why? Heavier cars must absorb more energy (from their own momentum) than light cars in a single-car crash, but only the average of the momentum of the two cars in a two-car crash.
The IIHS warns not to compare crash test results of cars of very different weights, such as the A6 and the 9-3.
