Idle speed is a hint

Idle on the SS should be 700 rpm. The structural engineers are quite proud that they have moved all the resonances high enough that the idle can be set there (the 9-5's 900 rpm idle is above the lowest resonance). But if you are leaking air somewhere, the trionic will keep mixing in more fuel to keep the FA ratio correct, and the motorized throttle will bump against the stops trying to drop idle. This is a theory, anyways. I'm told that a good way to find a vacuum leak is to use a smoke machine. Another way to check for idle leaks is to look (using a Tech II) at the "fuel trim" - it should show they're adding more fuel than they think it should need if there's a vacuum leak. Hmmm, might be an interesting "bug" to throw at the techs in service school...
Anyway, as a fellow engineer, you (and I) know that this engine stuff isn't done by magic. Given fuel, air, spark, and timing all in the correct proportions, and oil in the sump, the performance is determined. A calibrated boost gauge can be used to infer the air, and all the rest (and the air as well) can be determined using a Tech II.
Have you tried driving a different SS?
