Turbo leak with smoke - how quickly?

I purchased my 2000 Saab 9.3 in May of this year and am its second owner.
At the time of purchase, the car had 32000 miles, had been checked out under warranty by a local Saab dealer (with no major defects found), and had its 32,500 mile service.
I took the vehicle in today for service because my check engine light was on (for a second time since May - the first being a blown fuse) and I had some blue-ish smoke coming out of my tailpipe at time of start-up.
The dealer said my turbo needs to be replaced, and since I cannot show them full service records for the vehicle including all previous oil changes, this repair will not be covered under the still-active manufacturer's warranty.

Here are my questions:
1) If it is a blow out of my turbo, as I was told, is this something that would happen quickly, or over time?
2) Could this be related to the oft-mentioned turbo leaks that I've read about on this board -- and is that something that has anything to do with regular oil change maintenance? Ie., could the leaks have started after I purchased the vehicle regardless of regular maintenance and now caused the smoke problem I'm witnessing?

HELP! I don't want to stuck with the bill on this when the vehicle is still under warranty, and I've owned for only 5 months!
