Hello everybody.
I am looking for a way to diagnose what's ailing the brakes in my 99 9-3. They have always been pretty weak (made a few posts over the last year on this), but the situation is getting critical. I actually ran into the back of another car last week. I blame it on my friend's Sentra. I had been drving his car all day, and when I hopped back into my Saab I drove right into the back of a car at the first stoplight. I had gotten used to the Sentra's brakes--which are much tighter and have a lot more initial bite than my brakes do. In theory, the Saab should have brakes like the Sentra--right? (hopeful look) In fact, they really should be better since the Sentra has drums in the back.
Here are the symptoms: A bit of shudder in the pedal under heavy braking. Also, there is a noticible stuttering feeling when easing forward with brakes. It feels like lotsa-brake little-brake lotsa-brake little-brake and makes me want to get out and kick the car. Also, there is really no bite until I get pretty far into the brake pedal, then it comes on all at once. When it does come on, there is a lot of stopping power, like driving into glue.
I end up either stopping short of where I want to and coasting forward (lurchingly), or (like last week) not quite stopping in time. Routine braking shouldn't take this much concentration.
Here is what I have done to try to improve things: I replaced the front rotors with some Zimermans. I replaced the front pads with greenstuff pads. The shuddering died down a lot when I replaced the front rotors and the pedal seems to be a bit higher (or maybe usable braking moved up in the pedal a bit).
What next? Back pads and rotors? I guess the remaining shuddering has to be there. Could it be something else? Could rear rotors cause the overall weakness, and the lurching at lights?
Where would you start?
Thanks!
Heath
