Engine louder, less powerful!?!

I haven't really had a chance to look into it thoroughly as of late, but my car's engine has been making more thrashing noises and seeming less punchy for the past few hundred miles. (99 9-3) Also, there seems to be more bucking on acceleration/deceleration than normal. This engine roughness is despite rapidly cooling outside temps.
The engine pitch seems higher, harsher and much shallower than usual - more like an economy car engine (its not THAT slow, but the noise is really like that.
Anyone have a short list of likely culprits for a louder, less powerful engine. For some reason I can't quite put my finger on, I have this suspicion about the tranny being the root culprit and the engine's resultant distress being merely a symptom.
