Its unfortunate that a substantive decision such as which car to buy should devolve into a debate as to which transportation accessory best matches your image, but that's the net effect of extended warranties, safety regulations, brand homogenization, and the fact that for reasons of technical complexity and a lack of time, people can't work on their cars much anymore.
Realistically, you determine if you are a [coupe, sedan, SUV, etc.,] guy, then determine your budget, then slide the selector on comfort vs aggressiveness, and then buy the most horsepower at your price/comfort level. You avoid only marques that are not "up to par" on the included maintenance service for X amount of years. For purposes of calculation, you should also assume that you will replace the vehicle before it goes out of warranty, as your own position on the time and money slider will eventually dictate you do.
Issues such as long term reliability and worrying about what happens in twenty years when your kid crashes the thing -- those values are outdated.
I believe these facts to be undeniably true.
The only interesting matter to debate is whether this is progress or not.
