In my opinion these two upgrades do more for improving handling than any others/ The KIC Steering brace locks down the steering mechanism and eliminates most of the slop that contributes to torque steer. The heavy sway bar solves most of the problems with the rear suspension. Poly bushings can be purchased with the brace for the best control, but those add about $120 and are not simple to install. I used my SAAB mechanic to do this. The KIC steering brace and a sway bar comparable but less expensive than the SAS ($100 vice $125) can be purchased from Nick Taliaferro at genuinesaab.com. Nick is a pleasure to work with.

After these mods, the suspension can be further improved by performance springs and dampers (I bought the Eibach Pro System for about $540). It lowers the car about 1” and give a more controlled, but stiffer ride. The last improvement is to replace the balance of the bushings with poly bushings. These are available from Brad @ KCSAAB.com. He too is great to work with.

Because I have the luxury of many mountain roads where I live, I’ve done all of the above to my car at a considerable cost (I don’t want to add it all up, but it’s more than $1K in parts alone). The result on my 2002 SE Convertible is a tremendous improvement in handling and control. The car handles the way it should have from the factory (but my wife doesn’t like the firmer ride).

If I was only spending $500, I would go with the rear sway bar (cheap and DIY install) and the steering brace (about $300) and can be done yourself. I had my mechanic install it because I replaced the bushings too.

After improving the suspension, I did the Stage II ECU that added 40-something more horses. The car is a real blast now.

Happy SAABing, I hope this helps.
