Believe or not I actually made my own input on my 1999 Saab 9-3 using an amplifier that I had installed. Not sure anyone had ever attempted this, but here is what I did. Last summer I installed an aftermarket amplifier using the preamp on the back of the stock headunit. I purchased an 8-pin din to rca output to the amp. I wanted to attempt to install XM radio in my car without needing to use the FM modulator (partly due to the loss of sound quality, but even more so the enjoyment of doing something absurd.) My plan was to have two inputs into the rca wire going to the amp (one being the stock headunit and second being XM radio). I went to radio shack and bought a switch which has two inputs to one output. This was the easy part, I attached each channel of the repsective inputs to their side and then the amp output, so when the switch is left the headuinit is an, right XM is on, and middle is off. The next problem was that XM radio does not good volume control. So, I decided to install an in-line volume control. After some internet research I made another trek to radio shak and picked up a potentionmeter. I soldered the appropriate channels and ground wires and with much luck, I had an in-line volume control. I ran the XM radio input wire behind the heating controls and down through the opening behind the coin tray (in front of shifter). I tapped into the lighter for power. Lastly, I drilled two holes in the panel beneath the steering wheel for my new switch and volume control. I tried to keep them out of site as much as possible (it actually looks clean). Turns out a week later I didn't really like XM radio so I sold that and bought an ipod, which the car was already perfectly setup for. This project took awhile especially since it was a lot of trial and error, but I suppose it was one of the best ways I have ever wasted my time.
