If you buy a used part with all the pixels showing (ribbon cable connection intact), it is only slightly more likely to fail than a new one. Many are replaced under warranty, my first one lasted less than two years in a 1996 model car. Second one about 5 years.
Any of the suggested fixes can help, but for a permanent fix, the soldered ribbon cable connector would have to be replaced with a low-profile 2-piece mechanical connector, like the ones used in portable computers or games, where a bad display would quickly loose customers. Given the number of connections, that might cost a car manufacturer as much as $2-3 in volume. Although that may seem ridiculously cheap for a computer, it is very expensive by the costing standards of a car display.
