Jeremy's pointer to Richard Bevan's Audio FAQ is the best place to start. That is what I used when I added an amp in my 2003 9-3 to drive new door speakers (and I left the head unit driving Infinity Kappas in the dash and the rear speakers). The Saab external amp is very small and installs behind the kick-plate on the right side of the center console in the passenger side footwell. I was able to barely fit an MTX 2120 2-channel amp in that same spot and get the kick panel back on because the MTX 2120 is only about 2" thick. If the amp is more than 2.125" thick, you will have a really hard time getting the kick-plate back on. The MTX 2120 is about 6.5"x7" in the other dimensions. You probably could fit something up to 7"x10" if you are careful. I had to rig a special bracket to hold the amp in place at the right position for it to fit. There is an "A" shaped metal bracket behind the kick-plate that supports other things behind the center console. I was able to drill small holes in that to hold the bracket pieces to anchor the amp.
So, it can be done to fit an amp in the standard location, but as Jeremy says, many people mount an amp in the hatch instead and run the wires under the door sill trim and up to the head unit.
Richard Bevan's FAQ covers all you need to know about connections to the head unit, etc. If you are careful and take your time, adding an extra amp is not a hard thing to do. Good luck!
Mark
