I have had 2 Viggens for collectively about 45K miles. I never had one major issue with either (a 1999 and a 2000). I carried a spare DI cassette which is a wear item that can fail prematurely and without notice - this is a $350 part, but an easy install. SID unit is cosmetic, but can be had for $250 or so and is another DIY install.
These cars are solid. I would not hesitate to buy another Viggen or a 9-3. If cared for properly it will treat you very well. In looking at used Viggens, once you get close, have the dealer run the VIN and tell you the warranty history on the vehicle. Also look for service stamps in the book. The services are important as is a solid oil change schedule (for me that means at least every 5K miles) Full synthetic a major plus. I would also check the classifieds here on Saabnet for one that has been babied by enthusiast.
Good luck. Its a great car.
