o2 sensor placement differences in '99 9-3's

Going to change out my DP and cat, I noticed that the locations of my 2 o2 sensors are the typical pre and post cat placement. First one on the top of the DP right off the turbo(in plain site) and the second one right after the CAT mounted to the top side out of view.
I was under a friend's '99 9-3 last week and noticed he had the same top mounted o2 sensor right off the turbo but another o2 sensor just before the CAT off the side of the pipe. I am suuming that he also has another o2 sensor after the CAT in the same place as mine, but I didn't look there at that moment.
I am interested to know why the difference in the same year production? and what do other have on their car?
I am not sure if this is a model specific difference(as he has a base automatic convertable where mine is a SE HOT) or due to the mid year production change. There is a split in VIN#'s in '99 which changed a few things so I am wondering if that is part of those changes and if anyone knows why the change?
