Are high revs okay?...............

A friend of mine has a 325i and I think it redlines at the same point my '02 9-3 SE does. Riding with him a couple of times lately I noticed he revs the engine really high (at least compared to me). I know that in my car, being a turbo, high revs help reduce turbo lag. Besides burning more gas, is it okay to "rap out" my engine more than I do? (I still can imagine my old '83 900 tachometer and the green "ECON" line from 1000 to 2500 rpms). I think I'm just being paranoid about getting good MPG's.
