Idler pulley and serp belt

I had my idler pulley seize up on a 99 9-3 at 110K, which shredded the serp belt also. I ended up just cutting the old belt in half with a pair of tin snips to remove it. I was able to thread the new belt y just removing the shroud underneath on that side of the engine and the wheel well. If you thread the entire belt except the idler pulley and do the following, you should get it on.
- Take your old serp belt (or any high tension strap) and loop it underneath and through the new serp belt.
- Get up on top of your engine and pull up on the serp belt with the old strap/belt. The auto tension pulley is spring/hydraulic loaded and will give when you pull up on it.
- Loop the new serp belt around the idler pulley.
- Pull up and slide the strap/belt out from under the new serp belt
- Put the shrouds and crap back on and turn her over.
- Pray for your good fortune that they put in a spring loaded tension pulley rather than friction adjusted pulley with arced slot and a tension bolt that you could never reach and could never set the tension on.
I did this in my parking lot at work (where I discovered the seized idler pulley and stinking shreded serp belt) with no tools other then the crappy torx screwdriver they give you with the car, a socket set and some tin snips. I must say, I was very satisfied with my ideas to use the old belt as a strap to put tension on the new belt. ;-)
I hope this helps.
