Sounds like it might be a case of sticking piston rings. What oil had been in use before? MMO is quite mild stuff, surprising result. However, stuck rings do not typically smoke at startup, that would be more like the behavour of leaking intake valve stem seals... but those typically do not respond to treatments of this type.
The solvent component does not last too long as it flashes off with heat and goes through the PCV and burns that way.
Others with this complaint should try this, as well as other solvent additives and engine flushes. Then there is AutoRX which in a class by itself for liquidizing deposits. AutoRX has a reputation for restoring seals as well.
