Saab does not have the old bolts now.

The factory torquing was absolutely at fault, no debate there. There is no evidence that the current factory bolts will not do the job when properly torqued. May do not like the current bolts and some just do not like stretch to yield bolts. But lets not create new facts that are not true.

I would like to use non stretch studs. I asked about this a few months ago and the reception was stone cold. It is easy to over react with a situation as sick as this where Saab continued to produce engines for years with head bolts that were not torqued to spec.

The problem with stretch bolts, is that you never know what the forces are. The forces are controlled by the yield point of the bolts and that varies with chemistry, grain size, amount of cold and hot working, heat treatment. That is a lot of variables. Proper hand torqing with strong fasteners would be more consistant and controlled than with stretch to yield. But over torqued stretch bolts are force limited and are thus good to use with automated torquing in engine factories. Over torque of strong bolts can damage or break the bolt, or, over torque can damage an aluminum head. So are stretch bolts a compromise? Yes. But stretch bolts are used almost everywhere these days. If Saab had not screwed up the automated torquing, then we would not be having these conversations.

I could not find any non-stretch aftermarket bolts or studs for this application. The bolts in the Saab are thicker than bolts typically used on gas engines.
