A good place to start is how much are you paying for this car? Second is how much work can you do yourself. Saabs are wonderful cars but they don't exactly belong on the cover of Great College Student Cheap Beater Cars Journal. The $100 a month sited in another post is a good bench mark, but it's an average--some years could be a lot more, some a bit less. Keeping an old Saab going is cheaper than what the payments would be on a new car and you get a wondering driving car for your efforts, but it does require the ability to come up with the wherewithall to pay for that occassional BIG HIT. All cars cost money to drive, but if you're thinking cheap/drive it and forget it, think Japanese. Toyota and Honda are the cream and cost accordingly. Nissan, Mazda, Subaru, etc give more bang for the buck. The best deal going is the Geo Prism which is mechanically indentical to the Corolla but much cheaper. Sorry, but "gramma cars" are the cheap ride.
