Hey DC...I'm a novice just like you and believe me...its easy. I bought my replacement from eeuroparts.com (word of caution - they almost always have the best price...when I was looking they were actually $30-$40 MORE than another place...I called them and wanted their price match guarantee and they said...place and order we'll refund the difference...sure enough they coincidentally lowered the price BEFORE i got a chance to place my order and voila...I didn't get the extra 10% discount).
Anyway...step one is universal: Open beer. Unplug the harness on the right. Use a flathead screwdriver to get the latch undone. The plug should pop right out. Unscrew the four torax screws. Pull the DI - straight UP. You may need to wiggle abit to get it unstuck. The new DI should already have grease on the tips of the coils. Mine was blueish in color. Push the DI in...straight DOWN. Tighten the four torax bolts. You may want to retighten the bolts after a couple of miles as the DI may have settled and the bolts may have come loose. I lost one of my bolts this way.
Some recommend that since you have the DI out, might as well do the plugs. This too is VERY EASY. Just buy the right tools and plugs and the whole job should take 30 minutes.
Dealer will probably charge close to $800 for a DI replacement and new plugs (including parts)...suddenly you start to wonder if they *may* be overcharging for simple repairs. I got the whole thing done for $350 and that includes the purchase of the tools to change the plugs....
