Mine burned out last week. About 2 weeks ago I smelt the burnt epoxy (fried electrical ozone). It went away and everything seemed normal; until last thursday. No warning or smell, just studder and a killed engine. Only after did I smell the burning electrical.
Got lucky since I was on the highway most of the day and it fried close to home on a side road instead of the middle of nowhere. A call to roadside assistance, 45 minutes of waiting and it was towed to the dealership where a loaner car was waiting for me if I wanted. By 10:00 the next morning it was ready. (As well as a recharged AC system due to a leak). Everything covered under the warranty; no out of pocket expenses, just the loss of about two hours of personal time shuffling around vehicles and waiting. Personally, I think you'd be wasting your money to carry a spare if you are mostly in town (close to a tow), and have a warranty still in effect.
