Says he paid $20k, around wholesale book. Wouldn't be the first or last time a decent Saab retailed for around wholesale so to speak.
There's a retail book value and a wholesale book value. Generally dealers converse with the wholesale book value as the benchmark, and then how far back of book the dealer will buy the car. Example: we called the MBZ dealer about a late model C230, book was $28k ish and they said they were a buyer for "ten grand back", tanslated meaning about $18k. That's an extreme example, so now if you paid the $28k wholesale value the dealer would be making $10 less certification and reconditioning expenses.
I use that example to deflect resale critsisim of Saabs as few vehicles bring the true wholesale value and what was described actually occured on an MBZ were trying to take in trade. On most Saabs it's more like 3-5 grand back. So now a dealer buys a car for 3 grand back, it costs them 2 grand to certify it and they sell it to you for wholesale and make a grand. Easy business.
