Copper plugs last 15k,a possible cause of DI failure?

I first had the plugs replaced on my '99 9-3 at the 30k mile service (Dealer). At 48k, my DI cassette went. Popped a new one in. Today went to my SAAB mechanic (independent) for some new plugs, and he found the plugs that were in there to be in lousy shape. They were NGK copper plugs too...and they had 18k + miles on them. Could this be a cause of the DI problem? If an owner follows the manual (the one that came w/ my '99 9-3 anyway) its says to change the plugs every 30k miles. However, dealers seem to be using the copper plugs, which really seem to last only 15k or so.
My mechanic suggested NGK platinum plugs.
